Paparazzi.
A shot from the KIAD Fashion Dept catalogue I shot in 2006. Here’s a video of the image as part of the invite/poster I designed.
We had a lot of fun making these pictures. Both whilst shooting and in post when we created this newspaper look; laser-printing, ripping (…and jumping on) the pictures before scanning the sheets back, ready for the layout.
The original images were shot on a Canon EOS 20D.

UCA Rochester - Fashion Catalogue

This is another Graduate Catalogue I photographed and art-directed whilst working for the Fashion Promotion course at UCCA a few years ago.

This time the brief was to fit 1 outfit from each Fashion Student’s collection into a catalogue. The problem was that there were over 60 students; all with completely different collections and concepts. The publication needed to showcase everyones individual talent, without looking like a ‘trying-to-hard’ student publication or a boring phonebook. It was decided to make it into a completely visual fashion magazine; which enabled us to group the students based on their concepts and we could develop characters and story-lines around these main themes.

The students, who essentially produced the catalogue, developed 5 different stories based loosely around the local area of the Medway towns. We sourced 4 different locations and organised for one story to be shot in the studio. All locations were nearby the Rochester campus. It was shot over 4 days in March, and averaged around 15+ outfits per day.

The images were selected and retouched by the students who also designed the catalogue and dealt with the printers.

There is a complete flick-through video here!

UCCA Fashion Catalogue

This a job I did whilst working as a Digital Media Lecturer for the BA in Fashion Promotion at UCCA in 2006. It is a catalogue featuring 71 students from the Fashion Design and Fashion Product Innovation courses and 41 students from Fashion Promotion at UCCA. 112 individual creatives in 1 publication!

Me and the student team planned and produced the shoot, did the treatment, layout and negotiated with the printers. The main art direction for the catalogue was based around a ‘paparazzi’ theme, with tabloid, celebrity, CCTV thrown in…  All the images were laser printed, abused, scanned and worked on.

The end result got some complaints from the design students, but the catalogue itself was embraced by everyone. Since this was the first year of UCCA (…after KIAD and SIAD merged) the new brand identity had to be enforced in all new marketing material: a new logo, and the new grey and green colours. We chose to print the catalogue on recycled newspaper stock, with a section of fluorescent green paper in the middle (for note-taking at the fashion show where it was distributed). Ultimately the combination of the grey and green made it clear which university the catalogue belonged to.
